With the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the United States government has established changes to the duration of Daylight Saving Time (DST). Beginning in 2007, DST will now remain in effect each year between the second (2
nd) Sunday of March until the first (1
st) Sunday of November (e.g., March 9, 2008 through November 2, 2008).
While this change primarily impacts the United States and Canada, it also impacts any users who interact with or send calendar invitations or who are dependent upon date/time calculations with companies and persons within the United States or Canada.
The Verizon Wireless network will seamlessly support the change to DST. While most customers’ devices will experience no impact, customers with BlackBerry devices and most PDAs/smartphones running Palm OS or Windows Mobile will be required to update or patch their devices.
If you are an individual or personal computer user, your computer may require an update in order to support the updated Daylight Saving Time rules. If necessary, please ensure that your computer is updated prior to updating your mobile device. For additional information or support, contact your operating system vendor.
If you are an enterprise end user, contact your IT organization prior to applying the DST update to your handheld device.
If you are an enterprise IT administrator, follow the specific directions from your OS and middleware vendors to deploy any patches and updates for DST. Typically, the updates should be performed in the following order:
- Server Operating System (Windows Server, etc)
- Collaboration Servers (Exchange Server, Lotus Domino, etc)
- Middleware Servers, if applicable (Wireless Sync, RIM, Good, etc)
- End-user PCs and collaboration software (Windows XP, etc)
- Mobile Device
In addition to updating their devices, customers are also encouraged to check with any third-party software providers, as the DST time changes may impact:
- Calendars/Scheduling
- Date and/or Time Calculations
- Transaction Logging
Check the chart below to look up your device’s available DST support and required updates (if available). Before installing any of the updates, please check with your company’s IT Department.

The patches for your Verizon Wireless Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices are temporary registry updates which will not survive a device hard reset.
Customers are encouraged to take advantage of any available maintenance release updates as they become available from the device manufacturer to permanently correct their device’s DST timing.
Verizon Wireless will post additional information on this web page as patches or updates become available for impacted devices.
