  7. Will Wireless Sync work through my proxy server?

If your company employs a proxy for outbound-initiated Internet traffic (TCP ports 80 and 443) there are settings in the Wireless Sync PC Monitor that need to be set based upon your company’s environment.  Some companies may also use separate proxy servers or require user credentials if HTTP requests come from applications other than Internet browsers.

Here are the steps to check your current proxy configuration:

    1. Right-click on the Wireless Sync icon in the System Tray
    2. Select the "Proxy Setup..." option
    3. Enter the proxy server information for your company
    4. Save the changes by clicking "OK"

It is also possible that the proxy server will not allow a connection for more than a specific amount of time without re-authenticating the user credentials.

  8. What ports are used by the Wireless Sync Monitor software?
Wireless Sync transfers TCP packets over port 80 using HTTP protocols to communicate between the Monitor and the Wireless Sync server. The data is AES 128-bit encrypted over this connection to the server.  It is an outbound-initiated connection from the PC to the Wireless Sync server and equivalent to an Internet browser session.
  9. What does "Error occurred sending changes - Communications Error 80040207" mean?

This error means that the PC Monitor was unable to establish or complete communication with the Wireless Sync server.  To troubleshoot, first verify your proxy settings and also verify that the Monitor is able to connect to the Internet.

Verify the Proxy Information for the Windows user account:

    • Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools-Internet Options, Connection Tab- LAN Settings.
    • Verify that those settings match what is in PC Monitor.  If “Automatically Detect” is selected then no changes are required to the PC Monitor.  If “Use a Proxy Server for your LAN” is checked then copy those settings and enter them into the PC Monitor.

Verify that the PC Monitor is able to connect to the Internet:

    • Log into the Wireless Sync WebPIM.  Go to View and select Activity Logs.  You are looking to see if any connection is made to our servers from your Monitor.  If so then you know they are getting outside the firewall.
    • Alternatively, when the PC Monitor does its first initialization for a user, do you see blue arrows going in a circle during the initial first time sync?  If so, then the Monitor is able to communicate with the Wireless Sync server.  If you don’t, then it is not going outside the firewall. If it’s not going outside the network, you will have to troubleshoot your firewall timeout policy and the amount of simultaneous connections that can be made through the firewall. Also, check your company policy for this type of software to transmit large chunks of data through the firewall.

  2. Should I disconnect the wireless session when I don’t wish my device to actively check for email?
Yes, due to the always on (dormant mode) of many PDAs/Smartphones that enables the device to actively check for email, users should be advised that they should disconnect the wireless session when it is not desired for email functionality. Users who are not on unlimited price plans may want to more actively manage their connections to help avoid additional charges due to dormant, yet active and billable data sessions.
  3. Can I use another email client for my Smartphone/PDA device to send and receive email?
Yes, there are other options available to users of devices using Windows Media or Palm based operating systems. They will not have identical functionality of the VZEmail solution, but may meet the needs of some customers.
  4. What are the system requirements to install the Wireless Sync client on my handheld device?

The requirements listed below are for installing the Wireless Sync client onto a handheld device for POP3 / IMAP email configurations. If you are interested in monitoring an Exchange or Domino account (via the Wireless Sync PC Monitor application), please refer to the Minimum System Requirements - PC Monitor (Wireless Sync) in question #5 below.

The Wireless Sync Web PIM is Internet based and only requires software to be installed on a computer so that the client may be synchronized to the handheld device. Once the Wireless Sync client is installed onto the handheld (which must be done from a Windows PC), you may wirelessly synchronize data between the device and the Web PIM.

The Web PIM may be managed from any Internet connected computer or device (including PDAs and Mobile Web devices), regardless of the operating system being used.

  10. On Treo devices, why doesn't Wireless Sync always start synchronizing when the radio is turned on?
Wireless Sync has logic to limit the amount of attempts to connect to network when the radio is off. Depending upon when in the cycle the radio is turned on, it could take up to an hour for the first synchronization to begin. As an alternative, the customer can always initiate a manual synchronization by pressing the Sync button on the Wireless Sync client on the mobile device.

  11. Why did my Calendar information not synchronize to my Treo during my first synchronization?
If the Treo did not have a default Calendar file, Wireless sync is unable to synchronize the Calendar information. This can be corrected by opening the Calendar application on the Treo; this will create a default Calendar file. The Calendar information will now be synchronized during the next sync session.
