General Information
  1. What is Chaperone?
    Chaperone Family Locator provides a convenient and valuable service to help you securely determine the location of your family members’cell phones from the Chaperone Web Site or the Chaperone Parent Application on your cell phone. Your child's location information will be displayed as an approximate address and on a detailed map.

    Chaperone also includes Child Zone® capabilities which allow you to set up geographical boundaries around such locations as school, home or soccer practice. When the child carrying the Chaperone Child phone arrives at or leaves the Child Zone, you can be notified via Text Message. In addition, you can also elect to receive an alert at a specific date/time.

  2. Are there any indications on the Chaperone Child phone that it is being located?
    During the location attempt which typically takes 2 minutes or less, the cell phone will light up and display "Locating…".

  3. What calling plans are available with Chaperone?
    To use Chaperone, you'll need a family share account. You’ll need at least one parent line and one child line.

  4. How much does Chaperone Cost?
    Chaperone is $9.99 per month per child line. There is no charge for the parent line(s). Airtime or Megabyte charges apply for the application downloads. There is no charge for the alerts or locate attempts associated with Chaperone.

  5. Is special equipment required to use Chaperone?
    You’ll need a Chaperone Child phone. A Chaperone Parent handset is only required if the parent wants to locate the Chaperone Child phone from a Chaperone Parent phone in addition to locating the Chaperone Child phone from the web site.

  6. How do I sign up for Chaperone service?

    Visit your local Verizon Wireless store location or call Customer Service.

    1. After the representative adds the features to the account, the Chaperone Child phone must be set to Location ON:
      • Go to and select Menu.
      • Choose Settings & Tools.
      • Click on System.
      • Select Location.
      • Then choose Location On.
    2. Download the Chaperone Parent and Child applications to the designated phones.
      1. Go to and select Get It Now or Media Center.
      2. Choose Get Going, Tools on the Go or Browse & Download.
      3. Select Get New Application, then Featured Applications.
      4. Select the Chaperone Child or Parent application.
    3. Set up Chaperone on your PC.

  7. How do I set-up Chaperone on my PC?
    1. Go to Chaperone's website.
    2. Click on Sign In at the far right of the page.

      NOTE: If you are not registered on My Verizon, click on the Register Online option in the information box.
    3. Enter your 10-digit Chaperone Parent phone mobile number (using ONLY numbers and NO dashes or spaces) and enter your password.
      Note: Passwords are case-sensitive. You must type it exactly as you did when you registered.
    4. Click Sign In.
    5. If this is your initial sign in, you will be prompted with the Terms & Conditions page. You must read and accept the Terms & Conditions by selecting Accept and OK.
    6. You are now signed in and may use your new service.
    7. With the Chaperone Child phone(s) turned on, first time users must activate Chaperone on each Chaperone Child phone by clicking on Activate and following the steps.

  8. I forgot my password. How can I retrieve it?
    1. From the Chaperone website click Sign In.
    2. Locate and click on Forgot your password?
    3. Enter your 10-digit cell phone number (using ONLY numbers and NO dashes or spaces).
    4. Click Done.
    5. Click Close.
    6. Your password will be sent to your cell phone as a text message.

  9. How do I find more details on setting up Chaperone and Child Zones on the web site?
    Chaperone is limited to 10 Child Zones per Chaperone Child phone. For information on setting up Chaperone, please refer to the Chaperone How to Use Guide.

  10. What other features are included with Chaperone?
    • Family Messaging -You can send a text message to your child/children from the Chaperone website or Chaperone Parent application on the phone.
    • VZ Navigator Integration - Once you locate the Chaperone Child phone from your Chaperone Parent application, you can press the NAV button to get turn-by-turn audible directions to the location. A subscription to VZ Navigator is required to use this feature.

  11. Where do I go to get the Chaperone Parent or Child application for my cell phone?
    1. Go to Get It Now or Media Center.
    2. Then select Get Going, Tools on the Go or Browse & Download.
    3. Choose Get New Application.
    4. Then, choose Featured Applications.
    5. Select the Chaperone Child or Parent application.

  12. What if I change my ESN or calling plan after setting up Chaperone?
    Chaperone will have to be reactivated on the website. Child Zones will also have to be recreated.

  13. Can anyone else track my child's cell phone? How secure is the service?
    The account owner with access to account information and the primary Chaperone Parent phone, will be able to access the account, view location information and set up Child Zones for alerts to be sent to other Verizon Wireless family members that they designate. The location information is only viewable through the Internet or through a Get It Now application on a cell phone and can only be accessed by entering your account information including your password. It is very important that you keep this information private and not disclose your account information and/or password to others.

  14. How accurate is the service?
    The information provided by Verizon Wireless' location technology is generally capable of estimating locations within 50 to 150 meters in most cases but may be affected by terrain, satellite visibility or other conditions.

  15. How is it possible that the level of accuracy can differ (address, intersection, or city) when locating the Chaperone Child phone multiple times, even though the location of the cell phone has not changed?
    Even though the Chaperone Child cell phone has not changed locations, it is possible for the location results to differ when multiple searches are performed. For example, you may receive location results that display an address, intersection, or possibly just the city. The location information presented may differ due to many factors such as atmospheric, environmental and geographic conditions, satellite location or other factors associated with the use of satellites and satellite data, cell site location and information, or other network conditions.

    If you try to locate the cell phone again, it should provide the same or a similar location to one of the earlier attempts. If you are unsure or concerned about your child's specific location, you should place a voice call directly to the cell phone to contact your child.

  16. What are the system requirements to use the service?
    For website use, Internet Explorer browser versions 6.0 and higher as well as Safari and Firefox browsers are supported. For cell phone use, specific firmware is required on some devices.

    It typically takes 2 minutes to locate the Chaperone Child phone, however, the duration may vary due to other factors.

  18. What can cause a delay in receiving a Child Zone alert or no alert once my child has left a Child Zone?
    Location information presented could be delayed, inaccurate, interrupted or disrupted due to many factors such as atmospheric, environmental and geographic conditions, satellite location or other factors associated with use of satellites and satellite data, cell site location and information or other network conditions. Try to locate the cell phone again, it should provide the same or similar location to one of the earlier attempts. If you are unsure about your child's location, you should place a call directly to the cell phone to contact your child.

  19. Why am I getting an error when setting up a Child Zone or when doing a locate ?
    The Chaperone Child phone must be powered on, must be within the Verizon Wireless National Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Area and cannot be on a voice call during these actions Additionally, if you subscribe to Usage Controls and have Time-Of-Day restrictions in place while you are trying to use Chaperone, Chaperone will neither be able to locate the phone nor send you a Child Zone alert.

    No, the Chaperone service is limited to the National Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Area.

  22. Can a Chaperone Child phone be located from more than one Chaperone Parent phone?
    Yes, if a Chaperone Parent phone has a Chaperone subscription and the Chaperone Parent Get It Now application, the Chaperone Parent cell phone could locate the Chaperone Child cell phone if the user has the requisite account information and the account password. It is very important that you keep this information private and not disclose your account information and/or password to others.

  23. How can I check or change the Location Privacy Settings for the Chaperone Child phone?
    Privacy settings are established and set as Always Allow Permission default during the activation process. This means that the Chaperone Child phone will not be prompted to accept or reject any location or Child Zone creation and/or cancellation request. Alternatively, users with account access can change Location Privacy Settings to Always Ask via the Chaperone website in the Profile section. An Always Ask setting means that the Chaperone Child mobile device will indeed be prompted to accept or reject the location or Child Zone creation and/or cancellation requests. Note that if the user of the Chaperone Child mobile device does not accept the request within 30 seconds of receiving it, the request will time out and the mobile device's location will not be acquired or shared.

  24. Is Chaperone available on an Alltel phone?
    No, to use Chaperone services you must have Verizon Wireless phones. You may upgrade your phone at any time or visit the Family Finder website.
