  1. What device supports Global Email?
    Global Email is supported on the Samsung i830.

  2. What do I need to do to make sure I have everything set up for data/email and voice before I travel abroad?
    Make sure you have the following:
    • Samsung i830 device - supporting Windows Mobile 2003 OS.
    • SIM Card.
    • Appropriate mobile number/device feature codes, for traveling abroad (outside US). Options include a Global Unlimited Email Plan or PDA/Smartphone plan/feature with Pay Per Use for Global data usage.
    • Choose the email that will work on the Samsung i830 Windows Mobile device. Options include Wireless Sync (Enterprise Server or Pop Email) or Exchange ActiveSync.
    • Set up your email prior to traveling, so that you ensure you are able to get your email before you travel.
    • If you are using Wireless Sync, download the Wireless Sync application to the device using the following steps: Start> Select Wireless Sync OTA from the menu.
    • You should back up your email software/application and data through the Sprite Backup application and/or to an SD card. Sprite Backup is included on all Samsung i830 devices. This application will ensure that should your battery loose power, your data/email application will restore itself.

  3. What do I need to do to use Wireless Sync email while abroad?
    • Verify you have the version of the Wireless Sync client 6.4.8.3. If you do not, from the device select: Start> Select Wireless Sync OTA from the menu.
    • Enroll in the appropriate PDA/Smartphone plan that is right for you.
    • Set up your email prior to traveling, so that you ensure you are able to get your email before you travel.
    • Prior to traveling, ensure that you are set up with international voice and a SIM card.
    • To use your service while abroad, simply change the settings from CDMA to GSM in Settings.
    • You should back up your email software/application and data through the Sprite Backup application and/or to an SD card. Sprite is located under Programs in the device.

  4. How do I turn on the device?

    The power button is located on the lower left side of the device. Press down on the power button key and the device screen will light-up.

  5. How do I make a call or an international call?
    • Information has been included with your Samsung i830 on how to make international calls and how to call while traveling outside the United States.
    • To access the phone pad, press the lower left “Phone” button (with a green handset) on the left side of the device. 
    • While in GSM, you must enter + to make a call. While in GSM, press the 0 key to display the + symbol.

  6. How do I make a data connection?
    • Press the lower right button (with the red handset) of the device.
    • You will notice Bars at the top of the device.
    • To conserve battery when not using your device, it is best to put the phone in "flight mode."

  7. Why can't I make a data connection (to receive email) while traveling abroad?
    • First check to verify there is data (GPRS) coverage in the area that is being traveled, by clicking on the Data Connectivity icon to the LEFT of the Tower/Bars icon in the top tray.
    • When a data connection is made, there will be two outward pointing arrows (with no X). Upon verification, verify the connections settings by doing the following:
      • Select Start.
      • Select Settings.
      • Select Connections (tab) at the bottom.
      • Select Connections (icon).
      • Select Manage Existing Connections.
      • Verify/Select VZEmail.
      • Select OK button at the top right.

  8. Where is the "Qwerty" key pad?
    You can access the key pad by sliding out the pad from the back of the device.

  9. How do I disconnect a data connection?
    Press the lower right button (with the red handset) of the device.  You will notice the Bars turn to an X at the top of the device.

  10. What do I need to do when traveling abroad to use my services (voice and data)?

    You will need to switch to GSM when traveling to countries with GSM coverage.

    • From the main screen (also called the Today Screen), simply select “Start” then select Settings then select the icon ServiceMode.
    • Once in ServiceMode, select GSM to switch to GSM. You will be prompted to type Yes to make the switch. (Don't forget to switch back once you return from traveling).

  12. Why am I receiving an error message that says when making a call, "The operation failed" or "No service"?
    Verify you are in the correct mode - GSM/CDMA. To do this:
    • Select Start from the top (icon shows four colored windows).
    • Select Settings from the menu.
    • Select ServiceMode icon.
    • Select either GSM or CDMA (depending where you are).


    Note: Use mode CDMA while in US/Canada/Puerto Rico. For more information, please refer to Global Phone services.

  13. How do I use Sprite Backup?
    The steps to Backup and Restore your data are as follows:
    • Select Start>click Sprite Backup.
    • Select Backup Now. If you are saving to an SD card, you will need to select Options from Sprite Backup main screen.
    • Select Switch to Advanced Mode. Next to the file name, you can select the location to store on SD Card.
    • Restore Note: If your Samsung i830 device was in CDMA during your last Backup, you will need to be in CDMA to Restore your information.  After Restore is complete, you can then switch to GSM/GPRS if desired. All your applications and settings will be restored at that point.

  14. Why do I have an exclamation point next to the Tower signal instead of bars?
    You may not be in the proper wireless mode (either CDMA or GSM). Verify you are operating in the proper mode by doing the following:
    • Select Start from the top (icon shows four colored windows).
    • Select Settings from the menu.
    • Select ServiceMode icon.
    • Select either GSM or CDMA depending on where you are. (Note: You must be in CDMA mode while in the US, Canada, and/or Puerto Rico.)

    Yes. However, you will need to confirm that you have the proper coverage plan and features on your account to allow for data/email usage.

  20. Why am I receiving a “Cannot Connect” error messages?
    • Verify the device is in the proper mode (CDMA or GSM) by trying to establish a data connection. To do this, click on the Connectivity icon located to the left of the Tower/Bars.
    • Verify the following: Start> Settings>Connections tab>select Connections icon>select Manage Existing Connections.
      • When in CDMA: MY ISP should select Data connectivity #777.
      • When in GSM mode: MY ISP should select to VZW Email (verify it is emgsm.vzw3g.com).
      • Try to establish a data connection by clicking the Connectivity icon (located to the left of the Tower/Bars.
    • Sometimes a "soft reset" on the device will help the device recover if it is stuck. To do a soft reset, simply take your stylus pin and punch the reset button located on the bottom of the device to the left of the charger plug.

  21. Why am I not receiving email and calendar updates with ActiveSync (Exchange Active Sync) when I have elected in my Mobile Schedule to sync “As new items arrive”?
    • Verify Server Synchronization information is accurate (go to: Active Sync>Tools>Options>Server tab): server name, check calendar, check contacts, check inbox, select Options and confirm logon information is accurate. (Note: the I.T. group at your Enterprise can provide the correct server name/address.)
    • Because this solution lets your device know (through an SMS ping to the device), you will need to select "Use mobile schedule" in the Roaming box.
    • Verify Device address (go to>Active Sync>Tools>Options>Server tab>Options>Device Address) is set to vtext.com (Service Provider) and the phone number for this device is accurate.
    • Verify the Peak times and Off-peak times are set to the schedule of your choice.

  24. How do I send a text message from my Samsung i830 while in GSM mode?
    • To send a text while in GSM to a U.S. based wireless number: Select Phone>Tools>Send Text Messages>type +1, then the mobile number.
    • To send a text to an international wireless number while in GSM mode: Select Phone>Tools>Send Text Messages>type 011, then the international mobile number.
