1. I want to type a message, but I can't find the period on the keyboard.

   There are a several ways to get a period to appear when you are entering data:

   1. If you want a period at the end of a sentence, press the SPACE key twice. A period will appear, followed by a space, and the next letter will automatically be capitalized.
   2. If you want a period in an email field, press the SPACE key.
   3. If you want to insert a period anywhere, press Alt + M.
      Note: You can use the Alt key to insert the symbols printed on the top of keys.

2. I've been working in other screens on my handheld, but now I want to return to the Home screen.
   You can return to the Home screen from any other screen or menu by pressing the ESCAPE key (immediately below the trackwheel) until you see the Home screen. The ESCAPE key lets you backup through screens that you have viewed.

3. I've noticed the word PIN on the handheld, in the BlackBerry Desktop Software, and in the documentation. What is it?

   PIN is short for Personal Identification Number. Each handheld has a unique PIN, like every phone line has a unique phone number. PINs are 8 digits long.

   If you know the PIN of another BlackBerry handheld, you can send messages directly to that PIN rather than to the person's email address. Enter the PIN in the Address Book entry for that person and select PIN when you compose the message.

   You can find your PIN by selecting the Options icon, then selecting Status. Your PIN appears in the Status screen. Your PIN is also displayed in the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector and in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

4. How can I delete data from my handheld?
   1. To remove any part or all of the data from any handheld:
   1. Connect the handheld to the desktop computer.
   2. From the BlackBerry Desktop Manager open Backup and Restore tool.
   3. Select Advanced.
   4. Select the database(s) you want to delete and click Clear.
   2. To remove all data on a handheld running v4.0 software:
   1. Select Options.
   2. Select Security.
   3. Press the trackwheel and from the menu select Wipe Info.
      Note: This will completely remove all data from handheld.

5. What causes an "Out of Memory" error?

   Too many calendar or address book entries can cause an Out of Memory error. It may also be caused by too many third-party applications on your handheld.

   To avoid seeing this message, try the following:

   • Keep only essential contacts in your Address Book.
     
   • Restrict the information transferred from your desktop to your handheld during synchronization of your address books by configuring the field mapping. You can configure field mapping using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager's Intellisync tool (Configure PIM>Advanced>Field Mappings). See the Intellisync Online Help for more information on field mapping.
     
   • Restrict the number of appointments transferred to your handheld's Calendar during synchronization by setting a date range. You can set a date range using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager's Intellisync tool (Configure PIM>Advanced>Date Range). Select the Transfer Items within Range of Days item and set a date range. See the Intellisync Online Help for more information on date ranges.
     
   • Remove any unnecessary third-party software from your handheld. Use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager's Application Loader and clear the check box beside any additional software. It will be removed from your handheld.

6. How do I enable a password on my handheld?

   One security feature of the BlackBerry handheld is the password option. If your handheld has a password enabled, the data on your handheld cannot be accessed until the correct password is entered.

   To enable the password option, perform the following steps:

   1. On your handheld, on the Home screen, select Options.
   2. Select Security.
   3. In the Password field, select Enable.
   4. You are prompted to enter your password, re-enter to verify the password.
   5. The Security Timeout field displays the amount of time after which the password is enabled when the handheld is inactive.
   6. Press the trackwheel and select Save.

7. Will I need a new email address? Which ISPs will this work with?

   If your ISP supports POP3 or IMAP4, you can continue to use the same email address. You can also access multiple existing email accounts (including web-based and ISP accounts) from a single BlackBerry handheld through use of POP3, IMAP4 and/or mail forwarding. Alternatively, you can also set up a new BlackBerry email address for use on your BlackBerry.

   Yes. BlackBerry has a built-in wireless attachment service that will allow you to view documents.This service does not take up storage space on the handheld (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, PDF, ZIP, JPG, BMP, and TIFF are all supported).

    It’s as easy to bookmark your favorite websites on the BlackBerry browser as it is in a normal desktop browser.
    1. Open the BlackBerry Internet Browser.
    2. Click on the trackwheel and select "Go To" from the menu that appears.
    3. Enter the desired URL and click on "OK" to continue.
    4. Once you have reached the URL, click on the trackwheel and select "Add Bookmark" from the menu that appears.
    5. Choose a "Name" for the bookmark and click "Add".

14. How do you create a distribution list on your BlackBerry?
    1. Click on "Address Book" from the Home screen.
    2. Click on the trackwheel and select "New Group" from the menu that appears.
    3. Enter the name of the group in the field that appears.
    4. To add members, click on the trackwheel and select "Add Member" from the menu that appears
    5. Choose the member to add from your existing Address book, or click on "Use Once" to add a new contact.
    6. Continue to click and select "Add Member" until you have added all members required.
    7. When finished, click on the trackwheel and select "Save Group".

15. Is there any way to navigate more quickly through the BlackBerry Home screen?

    Yes – there are two ways to do it.

    • Use the "Alt" key and trackwheel. Hold down on the "Alt" key while scrolling the trackwheel... this allows you to scroll vertically rather than horizontally on the Home screen

    OR

    • Use short-cut keys on the Home screen. Here's how to set up your short-cuts:
    1. Click on the "Phone" icon from the Home screen.
    2. Once in the phone application, click on the trackwheel and select "Options" from the menu that appears.
    3. Choose "General Options" from the menu that appears.
    4. Scroll to the "Dial from Home Screen" option and change from "Yes" to "No".
    5. Click on the trackwheel and select "Save".
    6. Click on the escape key to return to the Home screen.

     

    You will now see that every icon on the ribbon has one letter underlined; by clicking on the underlined letter, you will automatically enter the application

17. How do I open an attachment?
    1. When an email arrives with an attachment, you will see within the email message: the name of the attachment, the size of the attachment, and the type of attachment.
    2. To open the attachment, click on the trackwheel from within the message and choose the "Open Attachment" option from the menu that appears.
    3. You will then have the choice to open either the "Full content", or a "Table of Contents" view of the attachment, which shows an outline of the contents of the file. Choose your preferred option and click on the trackwheel to open. The attachment will then be rendered on the screen.
    4. There is no additional software to download to make this work – it’s just a part of the BlackBerry solution.

18. How do I get the most battery life on my BlackBerry?

    BlackBerry offers excellent battery life with up to 3 hours talk-time and up to 8 days stand-by; here are some tricks to ensure you get the best battery life:

    • Use Vibrate Notification instead of Tone
    • Believe it or not, tone notification consumes more battery than the vibrate setting.
    • To do this, scroll and click on the "Profiles" application to change your notification from tone to vibrate.
    
    
    • Use the holster
    • When the BlackBerry Handheld is placed in the holster, the LCD screen is turned off.
    • The more frequently the handheld is in the holster during the day, as opposed to in a shirt or jacket pocket, the better battery life will be.
    
    
    • Auto On/Off
    • You can enable the Auto On/Off feature on the handheld to automatically turn the device off at night and on in the morning. This will avoid forgetting to turn off the device during the night and consuming unnecessary battery life. 
    • "Auto On/Off" is found in the "Options" applications.
    
    
    • Backlight Settings
    • On the lowest setting, the backlight is very bright and should allow most users to easily read in low or no light settings  - and will conserve battery life.
    • You can adjust the brightness of the backlight on the handheld from the "Options" application, and then choose the "Screen/Keyboard" menu.
