Wireless Sync (Email)

Description

Wireless Sync from Verizon Wireless provides an email middleware solution that allows customers to send and receive personal or corporate email, calendar, contacts and more from any Verizon Wireless PDA or Smartphone device as well as many different Get It Now® handsets. With Wireless Sync, you can stay up to date with your coworkers' and friends' email.

How to Get It

  1. You need to have a wireless sync enabled device, either a PDA/Smartphone or a wireless sync enabled handset, and you need to have a data plan. The device and plan can be purchased online.
  2. Once you have a device and data plan, visit the Verizon Wireless quick start page.

How to Use It

Instructions for use vary by device. The best way to learn how to use Wireless Sync is to watch a demonstration. Wireless Sync demos are available for specific PDAs and Smartphones. Visit the Phones & Devices page for your device and look for an "Interactive How To Simulator" link at the top of the page, then select the Wireless Sync section of the demo.

I want to configure Wireless Sync - what is the difference between the PC Monitor and POP3 / IMAP Wireless Sync configurations?

A description of when to use each follows.

Individual PC Monitor: Select this option if you are interested in configuring Wireless Sync to monitor a single Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino account. PC Monitor is for use with Exchange or Domino only and should not be selected if you are attempting to retrieve POP3 or IMAP email.

Workgroup PC Monitor: Select this option if you are interested in configuring Wireless Sync to monitor multiple (up to 20) Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino accounts. Not for POP3 or IMAP email.

POP3 / IMAP Connection: Select this option if you are interested in configuring Wireless Sync to retrieve email (POP3 or IMAP) directly from a POP3 / IMAP server. If you have configured another email client to also retrieve messages from the target POP3 / IMAP account, ensure that it is set to leave messages on the server after being downloaded.

What are the system requirements to install the Wireless Sync client on my handheld device?

The requirements listed below are for installing the Wireless Sync client onto a handheld device for POP3 / IMAP email configurations. If you are interested in monitoring an Exchange or Domino account (via the Wireless Sync PC Monitor application), please refer to the Minimum System Requirements - PC Monitor (Wireless Sync) in question #5 below.

The Wireless Sync Web PIM is Internet based and only requires software to be installed on a computer so that the client may be synchronized to the handheld device. Once the Wireless Sync client is installed onto the handheld (which must be done from a Windows PC), you may wirelessly synchronize data between the device and the Web PIM.

The Web PIM may be managed from any Internet connected computer or device (including PDAs and Mobile Web devices), regardless of the operating system being used.

    • 98 Second Edition
    • Windows NT4.0 (with Service Pack 6a or later)

What are the steps for setting up Wireless Sync?
  1. Navigate to www.wirelesssync.vzw.com and click Register to establish a Verizon Wireless Single Sign-On (SSO) profile. Note: If you have an existing VText or PixPlace account, you will not need to register again. Simply login using your existing Verizon Wireless SSO credentials and skip to step number 5.

  2. Enter your 10-digit Verizon Wireless mobile number in the Mobile Number field and click Send. A text message, containing a temporary password, will be sent to your device. Note: The temporary password is 10 characters long and consists of numbers and lower-case letters.

  3. After entering the temporary password in the Temporary Password field, enter and confirm a permanent password (using the New Password and Re-enter New Password fields) then click Next. Remember, the temporary and permanent passwords are case sensitive.

  4. After clicking Next, a welcome message will be sent to your device. You have now established a Verizon Wireless Single Sign-On (SSO) profile. Your SSO credentials may be used to access other Verizon Wireless services including Wireless Sync, VText and PixPlace.

  5. If you accept the End User License Agreement, click Agree to continue.

  6. Select the appropriate time zone and enter the required information (marked with a red asterisk) then click Next.

  7. Select Do not install the Monitor software on this PC. (You can install it on another PC later.) and click Next.

  8. Leave all options blank and click Next.

  9. You should now be at the Configure Account screen. From this screen you have the ability to add or remove sync devices, download the PC Monitor application, configure POP3 / IMAP server connections and more. Next step...

  • Add Sync Device: A Sync Device is any device (authorized Palm or Windows Mobile handhelds) that will be used to store email and PIM data (calendar items, contacts, tasks and Outlook Notes) locally. Registered devices are synchronized (meaning that changes at one device are propagated to all other registered devices) by the Wireless Sync server. Laptop and desktop computers may also be considered Sync Devices but are registered using the Add Individual or Add Workgroup methods listed below. Note: You must have at least one Sync Device.

  • Add Individual PC Monitor: Select this option if you are interested in configuring Wireless Sync to monitor a single Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino account. PC Monitor is for use with Exchange or Domino only and should not be used to retrieve POP3 or IMAP email.

  • Add Workgroup PC Monitor: Select this option if you are interested in configuring Wireless Sync to monitor multiple (up to 20) Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino accounts.

  • Add POP3 / IMAP Connection: Select this option if you are interested in configuring Wireless Sync to retrieve email (POP3 or IMAP) directly from a POP3 / IMAP server. If you have configured another email client to also retrieve messages from the target POP3 / IMAP account, ensure that it is set to leave messages on the server after being downloaded.

Feedback

How do I add a new Sync device?
  1. Navigate to www.wirelesssync.vzw.com and login using your Verizon Wireless Single Sign-On (SSO) credentials.

  2. From the navigation bar (located in the upper-right corner) select Setup > Account.

  3. Click Add Sync Device (located under the section titled Devices).

  4. Select device from those listed and click Next.

    • Optionally, you may choose to install Trip and Appointment Plus Extensions for Microsoft Outlook. This option requires Microsoft Outlook 2000, Outlook XP (SP2 or newer) or Outlook 2003 and enables you to manage trips and appointments from within the Outlook client. Note: These features may also be managed directly from the Web PIM without installing the extensions.

  5. Connect your handheld device to the computer and click Install. Note: If you are using the Samsung i600 or i700 you must have the Windows Mobile 2003 operating system installed on your device. After verifying that your device meets the Minimum System Requirements, check the box labeled My [device] is now running the Smartphone 2003 operating system and click Next then click Install.

  6. If a security warning appears, simply click Yes to continue the installation.

  7. Once the download is complete, click Install.

  8. Select the appropriate profile and click Next.

  9. When prompted, click Finish to complete the install and perform a tethered sync operation using ActiveSync or HotSync (depending on your device).

  10. This initial sync operation will install the Wireless Sync client onto your handheld device. Note: ActiveSync (for Windows Mobile devices) will sync automatically when connected to the computer. However, HotSync (for Palm devices like the Treo 600 and Kyocera 7135) operations must be initiated manually by pressing the sync button on the cable or by selecting the HotSync icon from the device.

  11. Once the initial HotSync or ActiveSync operation is complete, perform a second tethered sync to synchronize the Wireless Sync client. This sync operation will initially launch the HotSync Manager or ActiveSync interface followed by the Wireless Sync window titled Sync Progress.

  12. When prompted, enter your Verizon Wireless SSO credentials (the mobile number and password used when accessing the Web PIM) and click OK to begin synchronizing data. Note: Depending on the amount of data (including software updates and PIM data from any registered POP3/IMAP or Exchange/Domino accounts, if applicable) to be synchronized, this sync operation may take 10 minutes or more to complete. To verify that the sync is progressing and has not stalled, you can monitor the In and Out meter in the Sync Progress window (located in the upper left corner of the Wireless Sync Progress window on the PC).

  13. Once the sync operation is complete, return to the Web PIM and press the F5 key (on your PC keyboard) to reload the page.

  14. Select the method that applies...

Feedback

Can I get my POP3 or IMAP email on my PDA or Smartphone with Wireless Sync?
Yes, with Wireless Sync, you can have your POP3 or IMAP email pushed to your mobile device. The Wireless Sync server can monitor up to three POP3 or IMAP email accounts. You can even get your POP3 or IMAP email without setting up a PC monitor. The Wireless Sync server will check your POP3 or IMAP email account every 15 minutes, and push any new emails out to your PDA or Smartphone. You can setup your POP3 or IMAP email accounts from the Setup Account page on the Wireless Sync website. Note: You will need to install the Wireless Sync client on your mobile device to use the web-based POP3 or IMAP email option.

Feedback

Can I receive email attachments on my mobile device?
Yes. When an email message arrives with an attachment, you can select the attachment and mark it for download. Once marked for download, the attachment will be delivered to your mobile device during the next synchronization. In order to open, read or edit some attachments, you may need to purchase and install additional software for your device. You can visit Handango's website for a list of attachment reader applications for your particular device.

Feedback

Can Wireless sync be configured to override changes made on either the mobile device or the PC?
No, Wireless Sync keeps the PC and the mobile device in sync. If you delete an email on your mobile device, it will be deleted on your PC and vice versa.

Feedback

Can I use another email client to send and receive email on my PDA or Smartphone?
Yes, there are other email applications available for Microsoft Windows Mobile or Palm based PDAs. The functionality of these applications will not be identical to Wireless sync.
