What is Backup Assistant and why would I want it?
Imagine losing your phone and having to replace it with a new one. Then imagine having to key in all of your friends, family, and business contacts into your address book all over again. If you simply want to update your existing phone, you would not want to go through such hassles either. Save yourself some time and stress and get Backup Assistant!

Backup Assistant is a wireless service that saves a copy of your phone's address book to a secure web site. If your phone is lost, stolen, damaged or replaced, Backup Assistant restores your saved address book to a new phone wirelessly.

Schedule daily automatic backups or manually back up your address book at your convenience! Login to your web account and get full access to your address book. You can view, print, add, delete and edit contacts. Changes are sent to your phone with one click.

How do I get Backup Assistant?

To get Backup Assistant, you need to download Backup Assistant to your Get It Now or Media Center-enabled phone.

  1. To Download the Backup Assistant Application on your device:
  2. Select "Get it Now" or "Media Center" from the device's menu, then select either "Tools on the Go" or "Browse & Download".
  3. Select "Get New Applications". Download it to your phone.
  4. Select "Business Tools / Information".
  5. Select "Backup Assistant" and press OK.
  6. After downloading the application follow the instructions for syncing your contacts to the Web.

How do I backup my address book?
When you download Backup Assistant, you will be guided through a simple series of steps that will create an account for you and back up your address book for the first time.

Backup Assistant will safely back up any subsequent changes to your address book, either automatically, at a schedule that you set, or manually.

During setup, why does Backup Assistant show a different number than the phone number I use for my mobile phone?
Your phone actually has two numbers with which it is associated: the Mobile Internal Number (MIN) and the Mobile Directory Number (MDN). Backup Assistant should only use the MDN for the service to perform correctly. In most cases these numbers are identical, but if they differ you should answer "NO" when Backup Assistant shows you the incorrect number during the number verification process. A SMS message will be sent to handset to identify the correct number. When your correct number is shown, select "YES" to continue the installation. Standard TXT messaging rates apply.

How do I change the schedule of my automatic backups?
To change the schedule of your automatic backups, go to the "Options" menu of Backup Assistant on your phone and select "Set schedule". You can set the schedule to backup:
  • Morning
  • Afternoon
  • Evening
  • Late Night
An automatic backup will only occur if there have been changes to your phone's address book since your last backup.

Manual Backups:
You can manually start a backup of your address book any time you wish by simply pressing "Backup Now" button in the main screen of Backup Assistant on your phone.

Sign in to the Backup Assistant website and simply press the "Sync" button.

How do I start a backup?
To start a backup of your phone's address book, open Backup Assistant on your phone. From the main screen, press "Backup Now".

If there are no changes to your phone's address book, then no backup will be needed.

How do I restore my address book to my new phone?
If you have used Backup Assistant to backup your address book in the past, you will be able to restore your address book to a new phone. To restore, start by downloading Backup Assistant from the Get It Now service. Backup Assistant will guide you through a few simple steps to restore your address book.

What does "Pending" mean?
On the main screen of Backup Assistant on your phone, there is a red number under "Pending". This number indicates the total number of changes that you have made to your address book since the last backup. If the number is 0, your address book is completely backed up.

What does "Backed up" mean?
On the main screen of Backup Assistant on your phone, there is a green number under "Backed up”. This number indicates the total number of contact entries that are safely backed up in your account.

What is “Last Backup”?
Backup Assistant’s main screen displays "Last Backup”. This tells you how many days it has been since the last successful backup. If there are items pending, you should select "Backup Now" to manually back up pending changes.

I accidentally deleted a number from my address book. Can I use Backup Assistant to get it back?
Sign In to your Backup Assistant online account and select the "Trash" tab on the left of your screen.
  1. Mouse over the contact you would like to undelete. Click the “Undelete” action button to restore the contact to your address book.
  2. To select multiple contacts you would like to undelete, mouse over each contact you would like to undelete. Click the “Select” action button on the right of the contact. After you have selected the desired contacts for undelete, click the “Undelete” button on any of the selected contacts to restore the contacts to your address book.
  3. To undelete all contacts from Trash, you can click the “Select All” link, and then click the “Undelete” button on any of the selected contacts. All of the contacts will be restored.
  4. Click the “Sync” button on the top right of your screen and the contacts will be synced to your phone.

Can I access my contact data from a computer?
Yes. You can access and manage your phone's contacts at the Backup Assistant’s website. There, you can view, add, edit, import, ,delete, print and export contacts.

How do I print out all the contacts in my phone's address book?

From your Backup Assistant web address book:

  1. Mouse over the contact you would like to print. Click “Actions” button and then select Print from the drop down menu.
  2. To print multiple contacts at the same time, mouse over the desired contact then click the “Select” button.Repeat this for each of the desired contacts. After you have selected all of the desired contacts for printing, click the “Actions” button and then select Print from the drop down menu.
  3. To print all contacts from your address book you can click the “Select All” link in your address book. Then click “Print” from the action drop down menu.

Note: You will have the option to print the contacts in two ways: Print Cards or Print Contact details.

How do I edit a contact from my Backup Assistant web account?
To edit a contact from your Backup Assistant web account, mouse over the contact you would like to edit. Click the “Edit” button from the Action Buttons. All address book fields will be displayed. You can add, edit or delete field data.
  • To save changes, select the "Save" button.
  • To cancel changes, select the "Cancel" link.
Note: The following personalized contact items are not backed up when using Backup Assistant: Notes, Caller ID ringtones / pictures, etc.

How do I create a new contact from my Backup Assistant web account?
  1. From your Backup Assistant web address book, go to Add New Contact on the right side of your screen. You have the option to pre-populate Name, Email Address or Phone Number, and then click the “New” button or you can just click the “New” button to create a new contact. Enter the contact name and appropriate company information.
  2. Select the desired field then enter the appropriate information.

How do I import contacts from my Backup Assistant web account?
From your Backup Assistant web address book, go to "Import Contacts" on the right side of your screen. Click the “Import Contacts” link. You will be able to browse to the file you want to import. Supported file formats are: vCard 2.1, vCard3.0, Outlook CSV and Backup Assistant CSV.
  • To import, select the "Import" button.
    • During the import process, you will be presented with field mapping options. You can make changes and then click “Import” button to complete the import process or click the “Import” button without making any field mapping changes to complete the import process. You also can cancel if you decide that you don’t wish to import the selected file.
  • To cancel, select the "Never Mind" link.
Note: Contact import is intended to populate an empty address book. Importing contacts to an existing address book may result in duplicates.

How do I add a photo to a contact from my Backup Assistant web account?
From your Backup Assistant web address book, hover over the desired contact and click the “Edit” action button.
  1. Click "Add Photo".
  2. Click on the desired avatar on the right.
  3. Click OK.
To add a personal photo:
  1. Click "Add Photo".
  2. Click on "Upload Picture".
  3. Navigate to the desired picture; then click "Open".
  4. Crop as desired.
  5. Click OK.
Note: Contact images do not synchronize with the device. Only pictures in the .jpg, .gif or .png file format are supported.

How do I delete a contact from my Backup Assistant web account?

From your Backup Assistant web address book:

  1. Mouse over the contact you would like to delete. Click the “Delete” action button to remove the contact from your address book.
  2. To delete multiple contacts at the same time, hover over a contact then click the “Select” action button.
  3. Repeat this for each of the desired contacts. After you have selected the desired contacts, click the “Delete” action button on any of the selected contacts to move your contacts from the address book to “Trash”.
  4. To delete all contacts from your address book you can click the “Select All” link Click the “Delete” action button on any of the selected contacts to move your contacts from the address book to “Trash”.
  5. Click the Sync button on the right of your screen and any remaining contacts in your address book will be synced to your phone.

How do I manage trash from my Backup Assistant web account?
From your Backup Assistant web address book, go to the Trash tab on the left side of your screen. You have the option to restore individual contacts or permanetely delete contacts.

Restore individual contact:
  1. Mouse over a contact then click "Undelete".
  2. To restore multiple contacts at the same time:
    1. Mouse over the desired contacts and click the "Select" action button.
    2. Repeat this for each of the desired contacts.
    3. Click on the "Actions" menu then click "Undelete".
Permanently delete contacts:
  1. Mouse over a contact; then click "Permanently Delete".
  2. To delete multiple contacts at the same time:
    1. Mouse over the desired contacts and click the "Select" action button.
    2. Repeat this for each of the desired contacts.
    3. Click on the "Actions" menu then click "Delete".
  3. Click OK.

How do I manage mobile groups from my Backup Assistant web account?
From your Backup Assistant web address book, go to Mobile Groups on the right side of your screen. You will be able to:
  • Add a new Mobile Group
  • Add contacts to a Mobile Group
  • Remove contacts from a Mobile Group
  • View contacts in a Mobile Group
  • Rename the Mobile Group
  • Delete the Mobile Group
Add a new Mobile Group:
  1. Click "New Group" link.
  2. Enter the group name then click "Save".
Add contacts to a Mobile Group:
  1. Mouse over a Mobile Group name, click the "Actions" menu then click "Add People".
  2. Select the desired contacts.
  3. Click OK.
Remove contacts from a Mobile Group:
  1. Mouse over a Mobile Group name, click the "Actions" menu then click "Add People".
  2. Click the check mark next to the contact(s) to be removed then click OK.
View contacts in a Mobile Group:
  1. Mouse over and then click on the desired Mobile Group.
  2. Mobile group contacts will appear in the center of the page.
Rename the Mobile Group:
  1. Mouse over a Mobile Group, click the "Actions" menu then click "Rename".
  2. Enter the new name of the Mobile Group then click "Save".
Delete the Mobile Group:
  1. Mouse over a Mobile Group, click the "Actions" menu then click "Delete".
  2. Click OK.

What is the "Sync" button on my Backup Assistant web account?
The Sync button allows you to synchronize your web address book changes with your mobile phone's address book. The Sync button appears in the right side of your screen. When you select Sync, Backup Assistant will wake up your phone and synchronize with your phone's address book. This ensures that your phone has the latest contact information.

Note: The device cannot be on a voice call when the updates are pushed to the handset

How do I export contacts from my Backup Assistant web account?
Contacts can be exported to a comma separated values (*.csv) file only.
  1. Click "Select All" link.
  2. Click the "Actions Menu" then click "Export Contacts".
  3. Select the desired export file format then click OK.
  4. Click "Save".
  5. Select the location you want to save the file to and then click "Save".

How do I set my weekly Backup Reminder?
The phones listed below cannot automatically initiate a backup when the flip is closed.
  • Samsung A530
  • Samsung A610
  • Samsung A650
  • Samsung A670
For these phones, the Backup Assistant service will send a weekly SMS message to your phone that will start the application and back up any changes to your address book. If the flip is closed, the messages will be stored and activated when the flip is opened. You can also choose not to receive the weekly SMS backup message. You will not be charged for these SMS reminder messages.

Can I use Backup Assistant to transfer my address book to another phone?

Backup Assistant makes it easy to transfer your address book from your current phone to a new phone. Follow these simple steps:

Existing / Old Phone:

To Download the Backup Assistant Application on your device:

  1. Select “Get it Now” or “Media Center” from the device’s menu, then select either “Tools on the Go” or “Browse & Download”.
  2. Select “Get New Applications”. Download it to your phone.
  3. Select “Business Tools / Information”.
  4. Select “Backup Assistant” and press OK.
  5. After downloading the application, follow the instructions for syncing your contacts to the Web.
  6. Complete a full backup of the address book.
  7. Delete Backup Assistant from this phone (this should be done prior to activating the new phone).

Replacement / Next Phone:

  1. Activate the new phone.
  2. Select “Get it Now” or “Media Center” from the device’s menu, then select either “Tools on the Go” or “Browse & Download”. Select "Business/ Tools".
  3. Select “Get New Applications”. Download it to your phone.
  4. Select “Business Tools / Information”.
  5. Select “Backup Assistant” and press OK.
  6. After downloading the application follow the instructions for syncing your contacts to the Web.
  7. Backup Assistant will detect if the phone is new, and will prompt for the PIN code in order to do a full restore of the contact data.
  8. You may sign into the Backup Assistant Web Portal using the mobile number to view or edit contacts online or make changes directly from the phone.

When transferring your data from one phone type to another, it is important to know that some data may not be transferred to the new phone if the new phone does not support the same data fields as the first phone. It is important to sign into your Backup Assistant web account to view your data and compare it with the data on your new phone.

I just received my replacement phone from Verizon. Will Backup Assistant restore the address book from my previous phone to my new phone?
Yes. Backup Assistant will restore your address book as long as you had already installed Backup Assistant to your previous phone and your phone number has not changed. Without a previously backed up address book in your personal vault, there is nothing to restore to your replacement phone.

If you have used Backup Assistant to back up your address book in the past, you will be able to restore your address book to your new phone. To restore, start by downloading Backup Assistant from the Get It Now or Media Center on your device Backup Assistant will guide you through a few simple steps to restore your address book.
